The Story

(as told by Steven K. Lee)

His hand gripped the scalding cup of Starbucks coffee as he pondered the words to ask the beautiful girl to be his wife! Gulp. And what was she doing? She was changing out of her nice cute outfit from earlier in the evening into her pajamas! Ahhhhhhh!

So how did Chris and Sabrina get to this point? Well, I’m glad you asked. Let’s rewind a couple of years to the very beginning.

Sabrina was born in SoCal. Chris was born in SoCal. They were cute at first, then had that awkward stage with the big glasses (Sabs!), and then became cute again. Well, Sabrina at least. J

Fast forward a couple years.

Chris had a nice, buzzed hair-cut and lacked the scruffy beard. His days were spent cheering on the Lakers and being ready at the drop of a dime to play basketball. Not only did he carry around a basketball in his car, he always wore XL-sized basketball shorts under his jeans, shorts, and church dress pants. The man was ready to hit the courts.

Meanwhile, Sabrina was busy running about UCSD singing N’Sync, Backstreet Boys, and Jay Chou tunes. She was always ready for exciting episodes of Alias or a stimulating Christian romance novel. She was patient, but she wondered when she would finally find a boy that could dance smooth moves like Usher, serenade her with heartfelt lyrics like JT, and look as delicious as Jay or Rain. “Sigh, maybe someday” she wondered to herself.

Little did she know God was writing her story.

After meeting at church their friendship deepened and developed over a year or two. Sabrina thought to herself “the man can’t dance or sing. What shall I do?” But she assured herself “perhaps the Lord knows me best.”

Meanwhile Chris headed off to seminary to study the Bible. During the long days and nights learning the Greek and Hebrew he realized that he was lonely. “Certainly I need a wife,” he thought, “purely for ministry purposes of course!”

As the Lord saw their faithful patience and desire to honor him first, their friendship soon gave birth to the butterfly feelings and glazed over looks of new love. Beyond the butterflies, Chris saw a beautiful woman of God that shared his love for books, coffee, and steak. She would follow him, he was sure, if only he would lead. Sabrina meanwhile saw a man that desired to love the Lord, had a head of hair that put Asian pop stars to shame, and he embraced her inner teenybopper.

As the budding friendship deepened there were a couple of “define the relationship” conversations, some Harry Potter gifts, lots of conversations over coffee, all culminating in a beautiful “will you by my girlfriend?” question under the sparkling fireworks of Disneyland! Indeed that night it was the “happiest place on earth” for our two lovebirds.

The rest is just a giant puddle of coffee, phone calls each morning and night, Ruth Chris steak every special occasion, sushi rolls at Niban, and lots and lots of time spend reading and studying at Barnes and Nobles. Of course there were the lazy nights watching talented people sing and dance on TV and of course the Disney Channel!

So here we are. Chris and Sabrina are overjoyed you can celebrate with them the story of God’s grace in their lives. If you’re reading this you probably know them and know how much ridiculous amounts of fun they have together and with others. So God has been good, and hopefully they’ll have lots of super cute babies (ed. note: hopefully not a honeymoon baby)!

That is all.
